Coleman Experts,I have a 2. K1. 95 Lantern that was built in 1. I acquired it used from an outdoor club in the early 8. Since then it has seen occasional use a couple of weekends a year. I recently went to use it and ran into some problems. The first problem was that it would sputter a little bit but not stay lit. It also appeared to have a small leak that I suspect is from the cleaning needle shaft.

The shaft has some noticeable play in it and tightening the nut didn't seem to help. I have spent some time on your web site and forum and am wondering how far to go in the repair process and what parts are still available. From what I have seen on the web site it would appear that this is a severely cheapened (cost reduced) end of the 2. So far I have disassembled the lantern to the point of removing the frame leaving the collar and valve on the fount. Please excuse the long list of questions.

Here there are no threads to help back out the old packing. Any suggestions on how to do this? Am I seeing the reason that Coleman will only sell the complete valve assembly for an outrageous price? I did a check valve test consisting of pressurizing the fount and then not tightening the air screw valve. After about 1. 0- 1. I am assuming that the check valve is still serviceable but may benefit from being cleaned. Based on a previous post it appears that the initial sputtering symptom may be due to a clogged fuel/air tube so it looks like I'll have to remove the valve from the fount to gain access.

The instructions on the web site look good provided that I can get the valve and cleaning needle stem out. Now, I have saved the best dilemma for last. Looking inside the fount shows a surprising amount of fine rust covering what appears to be the entire inside of the fount and up the fill tube. Apparently Coleman didn't see the need to plate or seal this from the prefect environment for rust formation.

I am wondering if some of this rust has come loose and gotten into the F/A tube or valve and are causing some of my problems. So should I attempt to clean the rust out of the fount and if so, what is the best way to do it? Solvent mixed with sand or aquarium gravel? Would this cause a problem with the check valve if left in place? Thanks for you patience and advice.
